Pakistan struck three times before lunch on day five to move within sight of victory in the second Test in Dubai and close in on an unassailable 1-0 series lead.

England, set 491 to win, slipped from their overnight 130-3 to 187-6 as spinners Zulfiqar Babar (2-38) and Yasir Shah (3-63) proved a handful on a turning wicket.

Ben Stokes (nine not out) and Adil Rashid (eight not out) saw the tourists through to the break with no further loss.

Joe Root, 59 not out overnight, knocked off the two runs he needed to become the second-youngest England batsman after Alastair Cook to score 3,000 Test runs, aged 24 years and 200 days.

But he added just 10 runs more before failing to get to the pitch of a Zulfiqar delivery and edging to slip where Younus Khan snaffled the low chance, falling for 71 off 171 balls.

Ben Stokes survived a thick inside edge off his first delivery from Yasir - the ball flying out of short leg's reach - and continued to look unsettled as Pakistan plugged away.

Jonny Bairstow (22) - dropped by Shan Masood on 10 - was the next to go, though, in the second over after drinks when he failed to spot Yasir Shah's googly and was bowled through the gate trying to work to leg.

Younus claimed his fourth catch of the innings when Jos Buttler (seven) had no option but to play at a sharply-turning leg-break from Yasir, the veteran grabbing the chance.

Pakistan opted to take the new ball for one over before lunch, Zulfiqar zipping his first delivery past Adil Rashid's outside edge in an ominous finish to the session for England.
